Win4Lin Installation Howto Guide

General

This howto guide describes the manual installation of Win4Lin on a Mandrake 9.1 workstation.  Purchase a Win4Lin Workstation license from http://www.netraverse.com.

Manual Install

To do a manual install, get your pre-built kernel and Win4Lin here: http://www.netraverse.com/member/downloads/kernel_precompiled.php http://www.netraverse.com/member/downloads/misc.php

Get RPMs

Open a console

$ su
$ password
# cd /home/herman
# mkdir win4lin
# cd win4lin

Get the abovementioned rpm files

Install RPMs

# rpm -ivh Kernel_Win4lin*.rpm
# rpm -ivh Win4lin-5.5*.rpm  (Ignore the errors!)
# /opt/win4lin/bin/ask_license.sh

Enter name organization and code from your license e-mail from Netraverse

Reboot

Reboot the win4lin kernel

Load WindowsME

Insert a WindowsME CD and a matching boot floppy disk Open a console

$ su
$ password
# loadwindowsCD
yes, yes...
remove floppy a while later when prompted.

Install WindowsME

# exit
$ installwindows
VNET: v
DHCP: n
IP Mask: 255.255.255.0
IP Address: 192.168.10.55 (Linux is 192.168.10.5)
Internet name: pluto-win
DNS domain: aerospacesoftware.com
DNS servers: blank
DNS domain search order: aerospacesoftware.com, local
Gateway address: 192.168.10.100
Network neighborhood group: AEROSPACE
Network neighborhood name: pluto-win
Network neighborhood description: Win on Pluto
Network neighborhood logon domain: AEROSPACE
Correct: y

Windows Setup

Windows setup starts

Accept
Next
Enter a WinME ID

Wait

Long wait...

Reboot windows twice by itself

Login user name: herman
Password: herman
and confirm it

Win Script

Make a script on the desktop:

#! /bin/bash
win

and make it executable.

Run $installwindows for each user and repeat the above recipe.

Backup of Windows

Make a backup tarball of the following directories:

win, .merge, .merge-do-not-remove

$ tar  -zcvf  winme-backup.tar.gz  win 
.merge  .merge-do-not-remove

Run WindowsME

Run the win script

  • Login to windows
  • Delete crud on the desktop

Configure Explorer

Configure Explorer:

  • Home page
  • Proxy: 192.168.10.100, port 3128

Shortcuts

Make shortcuts for:

Info(I)
CDROM
I:\MyDocuments

Delete Icons

Delete garbage Icons for networking, MSN etc.

Update Internet  Explorer

Download and install IE from http://www.microsoft.com

  • Do a minimal install
  • Disable Visual BASIC scripting
  • Goto www.cnn.com and disable Visual BASIC download prompt

Install Java

Goto http://java.sun.com

  • Download Java VM
  • It should install totally automatic
  • Browse http://news.bbc.co.uk/ to test the Java machine

Applications

Install:

  • WordPerfect Office 2002
  • ChildView
  • PC-Law, Attach to System Already Installed
  • AntiVir, http://www.free-av.de

Add Printer

  • Start, Settings, Printers, Add Printer
  • Configure network printer

Defaults

  • Set WordPerfect default directories
  • /mnt/public/MyDocuments

Set OOo default directories

  • Tools, options, Paths
  • My Documents, Edit:
  • /mnt/public/LonaDocuments
  • Load/Save:
  • Always save Writer as MS Office 97/2000
  • Always save Calc as MS Excel 97/2000

Backup of Installation

Make a backup tarball of the following directories:

  • win, .merge, .merge-do-not-remove
  • $ tar  -zcvf  winme-apps-backup.tar.gz  win 
  • .merge  .merge-do-not-remove
